夫物芸芸，
各復歸其根。
歸根曰靜，
是謂復命。
復命曰常，
知常曰明*。

The numerous myriad beings,
All return to their roots.
Going home to one’s roots is called stillness,
It is the same as returning to one’s destiny.
To return to one’s destiny is called the eternal,
Knowing the eternal is called enlightenment*.

*enlightenment = brightness/clarity 明 (etymology of sun and moon)
